Steps to Apply On-line
Following the steps outlined here will initiate a preliminary application for certification by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. You must successfully complete the following steps and pay the application fee before the NBTA will formally enter you on the applicant roles.
The NBTA further recommends that you read the Standards for Certification. It is available to view on-line (Civil Standards, Criminal Standards, Family Law Standards and Social Security Disability Standards) and for download. Upon successful completion if this preliminary application, you will be sent an application packet which contains all the materials necessary to complete the certification process.

Civil Trial
The practice of law dealing with litigation of civil controversies in all areas of substantive law before state courts, federal courts, administrative agencies, and arbitrators. In addition to actual pretrial and trial process, civil trial law includes evaluating, handling, and resolving civil controversies prior to the initiation of suit. Criminal Trial
The practice of law dealing with the defense and prosecution of misdemeanor and felony crimes in state and federal trial and appellate courts. See if you qualify for Criminal certification?
Family Law
The practice of law dealing with legal cases arising from the family relationship of husband and wife, cohabitant and parent and child. It includes litigation of civil controversies arising from those relationships. In addition, it includes evaluating, handling and resolving such controversies prior to the institution of suit and post judgment proceedings. See if you qualify for Family Law certification?
Social Security Disability
The comprehensive legal practice of counseling and representing persons with disabilities and their representatives about their rights to receive benefits from the social security administration. Certified attorneys must be capable of representing their clients at the state agency level, at the hearing level, at the appeals council and in federal court.
